Washington’s farewell address essay assignment
1ST PEER POST( CLAIRE):
1.) I was quite surprised while reading Washington’s farewell address because he warned us about so many things that are currently happening as we speak. He discusses the importance of staying united, yet we are doing the
opposite. He also mentions the dangers of interfering with foreign countries, and how over-zealous state pride was going to lead to a split in political parties, and it did. He stresses the most that the president and his cabinet need to
use their power for necessities, not just for “ill-founded jealousies and false alarms” therefore, put people in office who are not going to lose it on another country for no reason. We can learn a lesson from everything he states in his
address, and see how history is going in a circle again. The reason why is because Trump had no political experience anyway. We learn this stuff for a reason.

2.) I believe that Trump’s travel bans are quite excessive when in reality we are one of the most violent countries. I get being banned if you committed a serious crime, but just based off of racism and speculation? That is unfair. We
know Trump abuses his power, but this is just him blocking out the issue completely instead of facing it head-on. Also, we have seen him interfering with other countries so many times we aren’t even sure which are real anymore.
Congress should be able to decide stuff like that, not one person and even then it is still extreme to ban countries. This is why our country is a hot mess at the moment
2ND PEER POST(MILAN) :
One of the reasons why George Washington’s farewell speech has managed to remain relevant today is due to the precautionary warnings he gave to the nation. He warned Americans that the dangers facing the nation include
regionalism, partisanship, and foreign entanglements. The problems that Washington predicted managed to make its way to the core of modern American politics. For example, his vision of neutrality and having peaceful relations
with other countries has remained just a vision. With Trump’s involvement with the war in Yemen and his choice to aid Saudi Arabia, he is essentially choosing a side and is not in any way neutral.
Although I disagree specifically with Trump’s travel ban, I do believe that one of the president’s major responsibilities is protecting our nation and its people, which includes protection from external dangers. The reason why I do not
agree with Trump’s travel ban is because I believe that he is incredibly racist and excludes these certain groups on the basis of discrimination rather than protecting the people. Terrorists are a threat to any country, however in
America we stereotype terrorists to be Arabs or people who look Middle Eastern. Implementing the travel ban was an abuse of Trump’s power and he should not have been allowed to do that, but I do believe that it is okay to exclude
actual potential groups from entering our country.
