Paper 3 for EH 101: A Classical Argument
Purpose: An argument is the most common form of academic writing. It is extremely important as this is how new ideas are shared in academia and beyond—through evidence-based research and argumentation. What you learn for this paper will be applicable beyond this class, so it is important to learn and retain the skills learned. Task:
- Choose a topic based on the given guidelines. 2. Ask a problematic question about the topic—one you’re curious about. 3. Do your research on the topic/question. 4. Answer the question (tentatively), which will be your working thesis. 5. Defend your position with evidence and respond to and refute opposing views.
*Note: Each student’s topic/thesis question must be approved by the instructor at a specific time in the course. Research: You will need at least three academic-quality sources to meaningfully use and cite in your paper, one of which must be from the university library (physical or its databases). Do NOT use Wikipedia or a similar “Wiki-site” as a source. Use sources to enhance your writing and support your points, but do not let them dominate your paper. The majority of the paper should be your own words. Use MLA format exactly when citing your sources. Format/Details:
- The minimum word count is 1,000 words. You can go over this amount, but you must reach the minimum or points will be deducted from your grade (approx. -10 points per 100 words short)
- The paper should be typed and in MLA format (with a header & title, last name & page number on each page, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font).
Submission: The paper must be submitted to Turnitin.com by 8 am on the due date of the paper. Turnitin.com will automatically close at that time and any paper that has not been submitted will be considered late. No excuses will be accepted for late papers.
