Bringing Health-Care Costs Down
In view of annual double-digit inflation since the late 1990s and health-care spending accounting for roughly 17% of GDP in 2009, the focus of health-care reform is cost containment. The discussion is about how to cut health-care spending while maintaining quality and access to care for patients. Look at at least two ways to cut the percentage of GDP spent on health care. You’ll need to be able to articulate how you’d go about doing this in detail. This can take a variety of forms, including the following:
Dismantle the current system and start from scratch
This is a massive undertaking. To reflect current economic constraints, revise the current payment system. Reforms to Medicare and Medicaid are being slashed. Based on the Massachusetts Model Malpractice Reform, national health insurance is proposed. The Balanced Budget Act of 1997, the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, the Affordable Care Act of 2010, and others are examples of legislation.
In your paper, include the following elements: Describe the model you’re advocating for in order to best control costs while maintaining quality and access to health care, and explain how it works. Analyze the approach you’re advocating for, noting its benefits and drawbacks from the standpoints of all stakeholders (e.g., patients, providers, and third-party payers). Provide a real-time or scenario example of the model. Compile a cost-benefit analysis of the expected outcomes.
