Which two unique neighborhoods or districts are you going to look into?
My proposal is as follows:
Chaptico, a neighborhood in the city of Mechanicsville, Maryland, and Leonardtown, a community near Chaptico, Maryland, are two unique areas I’d want to investigate.
After Charles Calvert’s arrival in 1663, Chaptico was founded. It was later destroyed during the British campaign in 1813. The pro-southern community restored this neighborhood after the war. Who built some of the historic structures that can still be located in the area today? In the Chaptico neighborhood, there are several relics and historical structures to be found. Deep Falls, Bachelor’s Hope, Wicomico Shores, and Christ Episcopal Church are among them (King et al. 76). While traveling to the grocery store, I may have driven right past the Deep Falls sign.
Leonardtown neighborhood, on the other hand, is a fifteen-minute drive from Chaptico community. The Old Jail Museum, which previously housed escaped slaves, is one of many historical structures in Leonardtown. I’m excited to see this structure because my husband and I always make a point of stopping at an African American historic site when we travel.

What is the history of these two neighborhoods in general, and what are their principal functions today? What are the general demographics of these areas, and how have they changed over time? What are one or two historical objects in each community that connect the past to the present and illustrate change and/or continuity over time?
Fieldwork: What recognized symbols (both human and environmental) distinguish these two locations, and how do they affect how individuals interact with one another and their surroundings? What are some of the perceived background elements among local residents and visitors in each district (such as culture, income level, age, education, etc.) and how might these influence social interactions?
Analysis: What are three sociological ideas that you learned about in the second half of the semester and can apply to your neighborhood research? Explain how each theory relates to your fieldwork observations and background research results. (Use the concepts and theories in the glossary below.)
Conclusion: What is a quick summary of your overall discoveries (what key information did you acquire) after completing fieldwork observations, background research, and analysis?
