The Declaration of Independence signaled the end of French colonialism in Vietnam and the beginning of a new era of “independence, freedom, and happiness.”
In order to show respect and a spirit of fraternity between the two countries, President Ho Chi Minh quoted the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen from the French Revolution in 1791. Ho Chi Minh was inspired by the French imperialists’ standard for their own country, “liberty, equality, and fraternity,” to establish Vietnam’s aspiration to be free and equal to France and other countries (Japan, China and later on the United States of America). As a result, to show support for the Alliance during World War 2, Vietnam formed the Viet Minh, a group of loyal patriots and nationalists. Despite this, Ho Chi Minh maintained that “our fellow citizens have always manifested an attitude pervaded with toleration and humanity,” 5 in an attempt to persuade Vietnamese to maintain a friendly relationship with France in the near and long term.
