Assignment COMP7041 Virtualization Technologies
Assignment COMP7041: Virtualization Technologies
You’ve been given the duty of converting an existing physical server architecture to a virtualized one.
Following a preliminary examination of the physical infrastructure, servers that can be moved to virtual machines and run on Hypervisors have been identified.
You must create a design that will make the transition to a virtual infrastructure easier.
To do so, you must first determine the following:
1. The required number of Hypervisors:
i. To execute the virtual machines without using any of the available resources.
ii. To keep the virtual machines running with 40% spare capacity.
iii. To ensure that all virtual machines are available at all times. 25 Points
2. The maximum amount of memory (RAM) consolidation that can be done without risk. Then use this to figure out how much memory each Hypervisor will need. ten points
3. Over the course of a year, the cost reductions in terms of the electricity required to run Hypervisors versus physical servers (Given that each server consumes 500w of power, requires 500w of cooling, and electrical power costs 10c per kilowatt-hour). 15 Points
4. The shared storage environment’s requirements.
This entails determining:
i. The amount of hard drive space required to store virtual machine files.
ii. How can the virtual machine files be protected in the event of a disk failure?
iii. After the protective system has been established, the number of hard disks
iv. The overall cost of the shared storage solution 25 Points
5. An example of the suggested infrastructure diagram (include Hypervisors, shared storage and network infrastructure). You should also provide a full description of the components depicted in the diagram 25 Marks.
Case Study Requirements:
The following information has been supplied to assist you with this process:
There will be a migration of 100 physical servers to virtual ones.
Out of a total of 100 machines, the following are the top ten:
76 servers are non-clustered, with 15 percent CPU utilization and 8GB of RAM (at 10% utilization).
24 servers are clustered, each with 12 percent CPU utilization and 8GB of RAM (@15 percent utilization), and must support peak loads 2x higher.
All 100 computers have the same basic storage setup, which includes a single 30 GB hard disk for the server’s operating system and a second 200 GB hard disk for the server’s contents.
1TB business hard disk drives will be used in the shared storage system.
Each enterprise disk with a capacity of 1 TB for the SAN costs 1000.

Instructions for Marking
This assignment will account for 25% of your overall grade in this subject. Marks will be given out depending on the quality of the students’ research as well as the completeness, consistency, and accuracy of the final report. A table of contents, bibliography, reference, and an architectural diagram should all be included in the report.
On or before the deadline, all submissions will be marked out of the entire 25%. Submissions received less than one week before the deadline will get a 20% penalty. These will have to be sent by email because the Canvas system will not allow them to be submitted after the time limit has passed. After then, no more submissions will be accepted.
