In the book review, you should focus on the book’s historical argument and how effectively the author used evidence to support the argument. The idea of a book review is not to repeat what the book says or describe it–that is a “book report.” Rather, a review analyzes the book and critiques it by examining the thesis and arguments. Though you may briefly summarize the book’s contents, the book review should do much more than recap the book. You should focus on the book’s historical argument, use of evidence, contribution to the field, readability for its intended audience, and general usefulness. Read some sample reviews in the Troy University Library Database to get an idea of how this is done. Read with a purpose. Here is a secret: you don’t have to read every word slowly and carefully. Preview the book by reading the Prefaces and skimming the chapter. Read a chapter at a time, focusing on arguments, not data. You might want to read the beginning and end of each chapter first to understand the main idea and then locate the sub arguments in the chapter. Do not take copious notes. Rather, read to the end of the chapter, keeping your main questions in mind, and then write a brief summary or set of notes after you have finished a chapter. These are the questions you can ask as you read the book and write your review (but this not a template for the book review): What is the purpose and thesis of the book? Look at the Preface or Introduction to find out what the author set out to do and why. How does the author make the argument? What is the author’s methodology?
