Unlike natural gypsum, phosphogypsum is approximately 75 percent sulfur, resulting in phosphogypsum being very acidic, with pH levels as low as 2.15. The acidity of phosphogypsum mobilizes contaminants in both the phosphogypsum and in the groundwater environment.
