Have you ever wanted to learn about cultures or discovering your self by studying abroad? An important aspect of my life is that I like to learn different things. The world is always changing, so I am always questioning everything. When I was a kid, I woke up every morning just to see the sun and I enjoy going to school to learn. When I got
older, things seem to change dramatically and more often. My mind expanded and I started seeing differently. One of the things in my life that has helped me learn and to see differently is studying abroad. Studying abroad led me to learn another language, to discover my personal strength, to expose me to other cultures, and to appreciate
my family. It is amazing to think that just leaving one’s home country can provide all these experiences because all of us can be changed in different ways when we deal to another environment.
If everyone works hard for what he wants, he will get it that exactly what happened to me. Since I worked and studied very hard, I finished high school with good grade. I applied to a university, which is the biggest and greatest university in Saudi Arabia, and I got acceptance from it beside acceptance from another universities. I did not
hesitate choosing this university to study in it so that I accepted and continue my document. As all know that studying in University unlike studying in school for different aspects, so I cannot forget my first day in university. I attended engineering college just for one year. However, conditions were bad there because the first year in the
university, which calls Preparatory Year, is going to be sets to the major as a high GPA, and the engineering was the highest major for the GPA. I started studying with two emotions one of them is afraid that can I get a high GPA and join the engineering college, and the others is eager to study and get what I want. I did the best I can so that
I finally got a high GPA and I joined the Engineering College after finishing a year, which was Preparatory Year.
I started studying in Engineering College, and it was not easy since they taught in English. I thought that if I entered Engineering that means I am going to choose my major in Engineering; however, I received a new news, that make me frustrated, that there is another competition between students in Engineering which who gets highest in
GPA, he is going to study the highest rank of the university which was Electrical Engineering, and that major what I wanted. I tried to be eager as I was in the first but I could not. I dropped the engineering collage and I told my family about it who were upset at the first time, but then they supported me.
One thing I have always liked to do since I was a kid is watching movies. Most of the movies are in English, which was the beginning of my exposure to the English language. I thought it was an amazing language and I tried to learn it. I remembered using yes or no answers for any question that I received, even in Arabic, just to practice. I
like to learn things that I love, but others don’t necessarily like so I had to learn English by myself. Sometimes I would look up for words and I bought English books. When I was in high school, I asked my father if I could take English classes during summer vacation to build my English. Learning English was challenging, and though the
classes helped, I knew that the only way to really learn it was to study in a country where English was the native language.
After what happened to me with the engineering collage, I decided to study somewhere else and learn the English. Therefore, The United States was the best choice for me. It would allow me to practice English in a country where the language is native and I can also study engineering. I also knew that I would experience many things in the
U.S. that I could not otherwise experience if I stayed in my home country. I wanted to broaden my horizons to learn as much as I could and I knew that studying in the United States could help me with those goals.
Studying abroad has great experiences, but it has not been easy. I have been through many challenges, suffering, and being homesick. One challenge is the cost of studying abroad. My father was paying for my tuition and for everything else, which was expensive. This troubled me, so I studied hard to get a scholarship from my
government. By doing so, I got the chance to get to know myself and to appreciate what I am capable of. I am responsible for any decisions that I make. In the past, the people around me took the action for me, rather than me taking an action. Now, I take responsibility. I have learned that I have great personal strength.
In addition, living alone and traveling has given me a chance to experience other cultures. When you go outside of your country, you have the opportunity to meet diverse people and cultures. I have many friends from different countries and I understood a few other cultures. One time I invited some of my Columbian friends to a dinner, but
they arrived late. I thought they were not coming, but when they arrived, they explained that in their culture, you go to a dinner or a party after 12 midnight, and you stay up until the sun comes up.
My time abroad has made me appreciate my own family more. I got homesick for them, so the time apart really makes me appreciate them and what they do. I learned from my father how he sacrificed for us. He retired early to take care of us and be close to us all of the time. He tried to make his own business by opening stores and
letting us work there in our free time, to learn responsibility. Also, my mom has many things that I learned from her like how to be patient and help anyone who needs help. But there have been conflicts with my family because
of my time abroad. After one year in the U.S. I went back home. My family said that I have changed a lot. They noticed that I clean my room, wash my dishes and take care of my own wants and needs. They also noticed that I mixed my native culture with the others I have encountered, which is not good in our society. For example, when
you have guests in your home you should dress formal by wearing traditional clothes, but one day I had met a guest while wearing jeans and t-shirt. This angered my parents, who are quite traditional. I still appreciate my parents and the lessons they’ve taught me. But my new experiences have changed how I think and how I choose to live
my life.
I know that everything I have experienced and anything I will experience has something to teach me, some lesson for me to learn. These experiences taught me how to live in this world and how to be good, as long as I understand the life lessons. In the future I will teach my children about these things and I will help them live the life they
want by giving them good lessons for a good foundation.
I am currently in the U.S. for my freshman year in CSUF. I enjoy being here, meeting new people and discovering the world. I always miss my family, but I have to follow my dream. Everyday I try to learn something new. Life has already taught me many important lessons, like a new language, personal strength, new cultures, and to
appreciate my own family. But there are more new things to learn, and I want to be one of those people who will learn these lessons.
