In 2014, despite being one of the world’s wealthiest countries, the United States ranked 33rd in life expectancy and 56th in infant mortality (World Factbook 2014). It’s all too simple to conflate health and behavior. To put it another way, we tend to believe that if you eat well, exercise often, and don’t smoke, you will be healthy. Sociologists, on the other hand, look at how a person’s health can be affected by their experience of inequality.

Address the following using the resources as evidence to back up your ideas:
What is the relationship between social class and health outcomes? Explain how access to healthcare, free time to exercise, and exposure to chronic stresses (together with the time and resources available to handle them) differ by social class and, as a result, how this affects one’s health.
What is the definition of a food desert? What causes it to happen? What is the influence of the occurrence of food deserts on the health of particular groups of people?
Consider race and sexuality as social identities. Certain groups in each of those identities are more likely to face discrimination and inequities. Explain how the actual experience of prejudice and inequality might negatively effect one’s physical (not just emotional) health, based on the resources you studied. To put it another way, what is the link between experiencing inequality and prejudice and having poor health outcomes?
