Interview a classmate to discover their world view of pregnancy, birth and parenting. This can be a father, mother, partner, adoptive parent, or any person who has raised (or is raising) a child. If the person does not have children, then you will ask them about their own childhood experiences. Ask the person about each of the above stages and capture their responses verbatim. The questions you create should be designed to capture info related specifically to issues of human diversity. Issues of culture, class, and religion, for example, will be especially relevant here and your goal is to ask questions that will get at how the components of diversity affect milestones of pregnancy, birth, and child rearing in the early years. Diversity issues must be explored to receive full credit.
In the weeks before the interview, we will explore several resources that will help you understand different cultural perspectives related to parenting issues. You must create your own questions that are specifically related to the person you will interview. Refer to the “Interview Questions and Tips” sheet for guidelines on how best to create your questions and tips on conducting the interview. Your questions should include, but are not limited to, the following topics
Prenatal care and support
Birthing options and traditions
Sleeping and feeding rituals/traditions
Guidance and discipline
“Spoiling” and how to handle crying
Socialization and attachment
You should rely more heavily on broad, open-ended questions (which usually lead to longer, more detailed response). Questions should be directly related to the textbook, readings, videos, and in-class discussion, but you should also be prepared to follow where your interviewee leads you and to follow up on any interesting detail that they might offer.
Your written paper should include the following:
Introduction—Who are you interviewing? Why did you choose this person? Any other relevant and/or interesting background you wish to add. Be detailed and thorough.
Body—You must use the Q & A format, which requires that you write questions and answers out verbatim. For example:
Q. How did you feel after the birth of your baby?
A. Very tired! And very happy! I had a lot of help, though, so I was fine. In my culture, it is very common to take 40 days to rest. During that time, family members came over to help a lot. I didn’t stick strictly to the 40-day rule, though. I got cabin fever and had to go outside! But I liked having the help! I also felt a little guilty though because here in the U.S. mothers get right back to whatever they were doing before. I felt like I was being a little lazy. Also, since there weren’t as many relative here as I would have had back home, I felt like I was more of a burden on the ones that were here—THEY didn’t have as much help!
