1.Some of the metaphors that the speaker used to describe conflict are “a volcano about to erupt” or “a tornado” or “a foot stepping on shattered glass” which are perfect in describing the destructive nature in people bumping heads. I feel the right metaphor for conflict depends on the situation. A conflict between two mutually silent people could be “a volcano about to erupt” because they could eventually explode on each other. A conflict with the whole family could be a whole tornado tearing apart each person one by one with everyone constantly alert. I believe conflict does have the power to transform if we see conflict. It’s almost like a raging war where one side is constantly fighting to win and beat the other, “All conflicts look as if one person’s gain would be another’s loss” (Ch. 11, pg. 325). We care so much about winning and gaining the benefit of the conflict when it is just making us look worse in the end.
Conflict has the power to transform if we see it as an opportunity to become stronger in our relationships. If we use conflict in a meaningful way, it can empower us to change and be prepared to act out when the same problem occurs again. I agree with this claim because it shows the other side of people and what really makes them vulnerable. If we know what makes people vulnerable, we can be better prepared for next time when the same problem arises again and take more careful precautions about what we say or how we act. It is as said by the speaker “ a chrysalis of change, a doorway to opportunity and the first ray of light in a dark night.”
The “Three Keys” that the speaker says is: to recognize what our conflict is about, it could be a misunderstanding or a dissatisfaction about a certain situation. The second key is recognizing when we are stuck in a conflict and we don’t know how to act at the moment. When we see that our solutions for resolving it are not working for us, we need to act on doing more changes within that conflict to keep it moving. The third key is to start speaking responsibly, meaning to become vulnerable and understand those who are also affected by this conflict.
The acronym VOCAB stands for Vulnerability Ownership, Communication, Acceptance, and Boundaries. The V stands for Vulnerability, to share feelings and allow for a tense-free environment. The O stands for Ownership, which is to be aware of one’s own decisions and path that lead to the conflict and how it can lead out of it. The C stands for communication, which is the skill used during conflict to understand others and how they feel about the situation. The A stands for Acceptance, which is not allowing the conflict to escalate and forgiving the cause of it. It is inevitable that every relationship has conflicts, and we need to accept it and be ready for when it comes again. B stands for Boundaries and respecting the needs of the other people and making sure the same conflict doesn’t happen again when we understand those boundaries.
The next time I engage in a conflict, I will try to improve on my understanding for the other person and to recognize the truth that I take responsibility for this conflict even though it might not have been my fault. Doing so will accelerate the healing process of a conflict and make the protective shield from it even stronger than before.

Before explaining one of the metaphors, let’s first define conflict. Conflict is defined in the textbook as “an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals” (11,325). I think I could connect best with the metaphor that conflict is like a volcano that’s about to erupt. When there is conflict, we get this feeling that it will soon blow up in our faces. It will soon turn out to be bad. And when it does, we can’t control what happens or what we are going to say. This is just like a volcano. We know that it will erupt soon enough, but we don’t know exactly when. And it when it does, it is out of our control.
Conflict has the power to transform if we look at conflict differently. I agree with this claim. I think it really does depend on our perspective. If we look at a conflicting situation as completely negative, it is going to affect our mood and our mindset. If we continuously think negatively about a small conflict such as who is doing the dishes, then we will keep that negative mindset and end up repeating the situation over and over again. This is called serial arguments, which are “repetitive conflicts about the same issue” (11,338). I think if we understand why we are having a conflicting situation and we try to understand and put reasoning behind our viewpoint and the other person’s viewpoint, it will make our opinion on conflict much better.
The first key to looking at conflict differently is to recognize what that conflict is actually about. Canfield uses the example of having a conflict over the dishes. And this conflict wasn’t actually about the dishes, it was about either wanting independence, for wanting to be respected, or to teach responsibility. The second key to looking at conflict differently is to recognize when you are stuck. When we are in conflict, we tend to believe that we don’t need to change, the other person does, and this makes it so we repeat the conflict time and time again, making us stuck. The third key to looking at conflict differently is to begin speaking responsibly. This means having conversations that allow us to create change in ourselves. In order to do this though it requires a few things that fit into the acronym VOCAB, which stands for vulnerability, ownership, communication, acceptance, and boundaries. Vulnerability is a person’s willingness to be seen. Ownership is when a person takes accountability for their own emotions, choices, and needs. Communication is the way that we listen, express ourselves, and ask. Acceptance is “embracing reality and letting go of what we can’t control”. Boundaries are ground rules that let others know what you are and aren’t okay with. The next time I get into a conflicting situation with a significant other, I will try to understand the reasoning for the situation. I will try to understand what is actually going on in the relationship and not let it ruin my day. I am going to try and not look at that conflicting situation as such a negative thing.
