Overview

For this assignment you will write a profile. Remember that, “profiles are written portraits – of people, places, events, or other things.” (Bullock and Goggin 224). You have probably written a profile or bio about yourself before for a social networking site like Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. (Johnson-Sheehan and Paine 67).

Guidelines

Develop a comprehensive and detailed 2 to 3 typed (double-spaced) profile of a person, place, or event that would be interesting to a general audience. When in doubt, contact me for further guidelines about your chosen topic. Papers should be typed in a legible (ex: Calibri, Times New Roman), 12-point font and double spaced (with space between paragraphs removed). All other formatting should adhere to MLA standards.

Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you proofread your paper carefully to avoid errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics. To write a profile essay that fulfills the expectations for this course, you must read and adhere to the specifications in Ch. 19: Profiles.

Organization

At a minimum, your profile should include the following elements:

• A subject (a person, organization, place, or event) that allows you to explore an issue, idea, or theme that is interesting to you and your readers.
• An interesting angle that captures a single dominant impression about the subject.
• A description of the subject that allows readers to visualize and imagine it.
• Background information that describes the setting or social context of the subject.
• Anecdotes that reveal the character of the subject through actions and dialogue.
• A main point, or central theme about the subject that goes beyond the surface and factual details to address larger questions.
• Sentences that are complete and relatively error free.

Here are two possible organizational patterns for writing a profile. The pattern on the left is good for narrating (see p. 233). The pattern on the right is best for describing (see p. 233-234). Other arrangements of these sections will work, too. You should organize your profile to fit your topic, angle, purpose, readers, and context. A profile can stick to basic facts or provide an intimate depiction of the subject.

Thesis Statement

But where does my thesis statement go? The placement of your main point (thesis) depends on the type of profile you are writing. In a descriptive profile, you can state your main point in the introduction. Tell your readers up front what you are trying to show about your subject. In a narrative profile, you probably won’t state your main point in the introduction. Instead, you should wait until the conclusion to reveal your overall point. Something rather open is fine on this essay (such as, “My grandfather is one of the strangest people you’ll ever meet.”)

The Conclusion

Profiles shouldn’t just end; they should leave an impression. Because endings, like beginnings, get special attention from readers, your conclusion should include information, ideas, or images that leave readers with a sense of the point (or thesis) you want to make. Conclude with a strong impression that will stay with your readers.
