GEOLOGY 100 – FINAL EXAM IN PHYSICAL GEOLOGY (30 percent of course grade)
LOCAL GEOLOGY (PART A) (15 percent )
Parts A, B, and C should be delivered to your Final Exam assignment folder as a single document.
Discuss and describe the geology of your region and place in paragraph style (state and local area, or country and local area – if you are overseas). Make sure you cover all ten of the following geologic issues in respect to your region: Note: The study must be written in paragraph style and in your own words, not as a list or a cut-and-paste job.
Geographic location (precise name, latitude and longitude, and relative placement) (national or regional)
Tectonic plate motion and setting, including the position and type of the nearest plate border
Surface material may be present, depending on bedrock types and geologic age (local and state or regional)
Description of the topography (exact local elevation and highest elevation in state or region)
A description of the terrain (plains, valleys, hills, mountains, plateaus, coastal, desert, etc.)
Geological features that are significant or distinctive (National Parks, fossil sites, caves, reefs, waterfalls, fall lines, etc.).
Geologic dangers (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, sinkholes, etc.)
Past and present glacial influences (if any)
Resources of minerals and energy (if any)
A drainage basin including important rivers, lakes, and key aquifers may be included.
You’ll need to undertake some local and regional geological studies for this section. You are free to use any of the course materials.
Physical Geology, 2nd ed. textbook, my Webliography (Content), and any Internet sources, including the USGS, state geological offices (see Webliography for a state list), scientific organizations, and local government offices; however, all sources must be properly cited in APA-style at the end of Part A. Use graphics to accompany your descriptions of your local geology (e.g., geologic maps, diagrams, pictures, satellite images, etc.).

EARTHQUAKES OR VOLCANOES IN PART B (5 percent )
To complete this component of the Final Exam, consult the textbook Physical Geology, 2nd ed., my course Webliography (Content), and online geologic research sources. At the end of Part B, sources must be mentioned in APA-style citations.
Choose one of the options below and tick it, then answer the questions that follow:
The eruption of a large composite volcano
(1) The plate tectonic setting, which includes plate boundaries and the sort of earthquake or eruption most likely to occur.
(2) Make a list of four (4) possible geologic risks that could arise as a result of the earthquake or eruption.
(3) What physical and human dangers could arise as a result of the earthquake or eruption?
Use graphics (e.g., maps, diagrams, pictures, satellite images, etc.) to complement your descriptions and discussions where appropriate.
Citations in APA Format:
GLACIERS, SEA LEVELS, AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE (PART C) (10 percent )
To investigate and finish this component of the Final Exam, consult your Physical Geology, 2nd ed. textbook, my course Webliography (Content), and the Internet. For research on global climate change, sea-level change, and the cryosphere, particularly glaciers, carefully review the Webliography. At the end of Part C, you must identify all of your research sources with full APA-style citations.
Finally, prepare an essay on two of the four subjects listed below:
1. The natural and human sources of global climate change, as well as their relationships.
2. The effects of global climate change and sea-level rise.
3. Changes in glacial and polar sea ice, as well as their responses and links to global climate change.
4. Why are glaciers the best cryosphere components for demonstrating global climate change scientifically?
Use graphics (graphs, maps, diagrams, pictures, satellite images, etc.) to complement your descriptions and discussions where applicable. In each of the four subjects discussed, make careful to include particular geologic examples.

The answer is complete. |
50 points: The essay illustrates exemplary understanding of the relevant material by thoroughly and correctly addressing the relevant content; identifying and explaining all of the key concepts/ideas; using correct terminology explaining the reasoning behind key points/claims and substantiating, as necessary/useful, points with several accurate and illuminating examples. No aspects of the required answer are missing. |
Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). |
Zero points: Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. |
5 out 20 points: Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable. The Student fails to provide an adequate synthesis of research collected for the paper. |
10 out 20 points: References to scholarly sources are occasionally given; many statements seem unsubstantiated. Frequent errors in APA 6th Edition format, leaving the reader confused about the source of the information. There are significant errors of the formation in the references and citations.
