Linda Williams looked into the melodrama Stella Dallas (King Vidor, 1937) and discovered motifs and identification structures that helped to explain the film’s enduring popularity. In the film, what does Williams discover? Are there any recent films that could be analyzed in the same way, that is, “against the grain,” to reveal a hidden message?

Please use all of the feedback that I have given you in the past 500 word essay questions that I need help with, as well as writing style here are some notes from a classmate: Beginning with William’s essay and her conclusion that people accept the female hero’s acceptance of fate without questioning any of the storyline, I’m just curious if we start questioning it more in today’s world than we did when this essay was written. The truth is that inexperienced audiences continue to be perplexed by the role of the female hero in the world. Even modern superhero films with a leading female hero, for
example, rely heavily on the male superhero, as if they are incapable of doing it alone. Do people who have never seen a movie in a traditional Hollywood theater understand what is happening on the screen in front of them? I sometimes get the impression that they are unaware of what is going on.
Gunning’s essay explores the concept of attraction in cinema, how it was built to be aesthetically pleasing above all else, and how the rules they chose to create early on, such as following the path of the narrative, shaped cinema in ways that are still visible today. As stated in the essay, the role of film is to create images rather than to show anything specific. When we think about it, the majority of well-known films are those that portray nothing more than an easy-to-follow storyline. The more controversial or difficult films, as well as experimental cinema and other forms of cinema, are not
recommended for inexperienced moviegoers. Only attractive films can maintain their fame, while the rest are merely there to be heavily criticized or “fame-deprived.”
Will the world ever accept a cinema where the main ingredient isn’t attraction? Or will more experimental filmmakers find ways to take a more “attractive” approach to filmmaking in the hopes of attracting a few more audience members?
