The Federal Reserve System, also known as the Fed, is the central bank of the United States. It was created in 1913 by the Federal Reserve Act, and its main responsibilities are to:

The Fed is a unique central bank in that it has both public and private characteristics. The Federal Reserve Board of Governors, which is located in Washington, D.C., is the public arm of the Fed. The 12 Federal Reserve Banks, which are located throughout the United States, are the private arm of the Fed.
The Federal Reserve Board of Governors is responsible for setting the Fed’s monetary policy. The Board does this by influencing the money supply and interest rates.
