example#1 Carmen
Servant leadership is a style based on the desire to serve and give to your community (Thomas, 2018). By putting the needs of others first, you empower people to perform at their best. When members of the community see your passion and your commitment through your actions, they want to be connected to you. Servant leadership goes against the beliefs that leadership is defined as hierarchical, patriarchal, and related to wealth or status. Instead, it is focused on serving others to help them grow, often without the title or recognition that comes with many leadership roles. Robert Greenleaf, the creator of the servant leadership theory, chose that name because it is contradictory and the polar opposite of typical leadership theories (Thomas, 2018).
Two qualities that would support interprofessional communication in providing patient care would be healing and empathy. Healing oneself to better care for others is important. If we are not healthy, or properly taking care of ourselves, then we can not care for others (Finley, 2021). We must take the time to get to a healthy point, both mentally and physically. Only then can we be ready to serve and give. To show empathy is to show we are equals. Empathy also conveys that, as their nurse, we are willing to go through this with them. These actions develop trust naturally through empathy. You are demonstrating that you are their peer, that you’re vulnerable, and that you want to support them (Finley, 2012). A servant leader is focused on their employees, constantly working to understand them better. A servant leader wants to get to know them, work on a good relationship with them, and help them reach their goals as a team member. Empathy helps servant leaders connect with their employees and actively work to serve them.

Example #2 dennise
Servant leadership focuses more on the people and community around them because their foundation is based on serving. Once the servant leader fulfills the role to serve first it then intensifies to lead (Malak, 2022). According to Thomas (2018), “They serve to build their followers through guidance and mentorship in order to fulfill an organization’s mission, whereas leader centered approaches begin with establishing mission success, then focus on building followers in order to prosper” (para.2). This means that employees would feel heard, valued, and supported which would make them feel more satisfied with their job as well as increase their performance. It has also been found to increase commitment and provide better quality services. Overall, the empower human growth and help the development of others around them in the healthcare profession (Malak, 2022). The servant leader will likely put the needs of others before their own.
Two qualities of servant leadership that would support interprofessional communication would be empathy and awareness. By having empathy, the servant leader tries to listen and understand others’ emotions and needs. This would create a compassionate and trusting atmosphere where people can feel accepted even when making unintentional mistakes (Hills, 2021). Awareness is important especially self-awareness. Self-awareness would allow us to communicate more honestly, with more openness to the feedback you receive from others. By being aware the servant leader can view most situations from a more integrated, holistic position. According to Hills (2021), Awareness helps on in understanding issues involving ethics, power, and values” (p.14).
