The recent global pandemic has challenged many deeply held assumptions about how ‘work’ is defined, performed, and even valued. At the same time, changing workforce demographics that preceded the pandemic are still in motion. As such, we are now faced with having to rethink the processes and policies for effectively maintaining and managing a workforce. At the same time, employees themselves are rethinking their personal and professional priorities, and actively making changes to reflect those new priorities.
While the ‘dust continues to settle’, company leadership will be looking to HR to help them navigate the workforce-related aspects of the emerging landscape as the they consider strategic enterprise goals. At the same time many of the core HR processes and systems (such as recruitment, retention, and performance management) will need to be revisited.
Assignment Context:
One of the most talked about trends that has emerged from the pandemic is the “Great Resignation” (even though it started before the pandemic occurred). What we are seeing is not only a transformation in how people en mass prefer to work, but what they expect and feel obligated to regarding their relationship with an employer, all within a broader context of self-reflection and prioritization of what work and careers mean to them in their lives.
Instructions:
Part A. Read the 3 articles specified for Assignment 1. You are encouraged to research the topics mentioned in them on your own, but for the assignment these are the only ones you will need to review.
Then, using examples and insights from the articles (and also from any other external research you conduct), describe what specific internal strengths AND weaknesses an organization’s HR department could face (hypothetically and/ or evidence based) from an administrative perspective, as well as what specific internal strengths AND weaknesses an organization’s HR department could face from a worker/ workforce development perspective.
Your response to Part A would therefore be a 2×2 matrix… describing the internal administrative and developmental strengths, and also the internal administrative and developmental weaknesses.
Part B. Using the same articles, now do the same 2×2 matrix, but this time describe the external opportunities and threats that could influence HR’s administrative ability, as well as the external opportunities and threats that could influence its ability to develop workers.
