Paper of Research

The research paper’s purpose is to give students with an individualized manner of demonstrating their comprehension and understanding of course topics. Topic selection has some leeway to ensure that the learner has an engaging and meaningful experience.

Expectations for a Research Paper:

The student will produce a 5-8 page paper on a topic identifying the criteria or traits necessary for evaluating the relevance of a topic, idea, person, event, or process in Church history during the time period covered in this Church History course. Specifics to be covered include:

1. Determine the importance of a topic, idea, person, event, or process in Church history for the time period covered in this Church History course. Discuss briefly the fundamental features of what qualifies this as significant enough to be recorded in Church history.

2. Discuss how one’s view of the Church’s nature and Biblical soundness is influenced by the key topic chosen.

3. Describe how people have understood historical subjects, ideas, people, events, or processes in Church history from a variety of perspectives throughout history. For example, a Catholic would refer to an event as a revolution, whereas a non-Catholic might refer to it as a Reformation. Different opinions on the same incident.

4. Put what you’ve learned into practice. Explain how you can apply this knowledge as a pastor, leader, or teacher in your local church (essentially, how can you use this knowledge to benefit others?). While this section may appear obscure at first, consider how culture, and even our local churches, may be utterly unaware of the truth of events in Church history, as liberal culture frequently strives to rewrite history.

The application portion is quite important. Learning is useless unless you choose to use it to honor God.

You must meet the following prerequisites in order to have a successful experience and outcome:

• Write a 5-8-page research report and submit it. A cover page, abstract, or table of contents are not required, and the number does not include the reference page.
• Include at least 5 scholarly references.
• Use Turabian formatting to present your study report.
• Use proper references to back up your findings and citations.

Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points:  Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points:  Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable. Structure of the Paper (worth 10% of total points) Zero points:  Student failed to submit the final paper. 3 points out of 10: Student needs to develop better formatting skills. The paper omits significant structural elements required for and APA 6th edition paper. Formatting of the paper has major flaws.
