Art has always been a part of my life, it started with my brother, who could draw the most beautiful images and I was inspired by him to draw and sculpt. When he died, I lost that passion for a while until my middle school art teacher, who had known my brother, told me that even though he wasn’t there didn’t mean that I gave up that connection to him. If I stopped doing what I loved then I lost the only connection I still had with him, so to me, that’s what art is, a connection. An artist connects with their audience, their feelings and themselves through their creation.
Art should be defined by each person as their preference individually and how it makes them feel, not by a book. Art is on purpose and it’s accidental, it’s both beautiful and grotesque, and I don’t agree that there should be rules that say what art is and whether it is good or not. Each individual person should decide for themselves what art is to them and why they like it or don’t.

Art is anything made by human hands to bring personal satisfaction to its creator. Things that are naturally found in the world, with no modification from humans, is not art. Even if the item brings personal satisfaction to the finder. All art has beauty to someone. Human tastes vary with everyone, and what one may find intriguing and stimulating, another may not. However, even if it is just the creator, someone will find beauty in every piece of art.
The e-book talks about the Makapansgat Pebble, which was never altered by human hands. While it looks interestingly like a face, it was found already in that state. Therefore, it cannot be considered art, but rather a neat find and worth keeping. I agree with the book here, because I have naturally occurring collectibles, things I gather each time I take a trip. Its the same principle with collecting shells at the beach each summer. They are not art, but they are nice to look at, therefore they become a collectable.
The e-book also talks about many types of art, and I will look at one. The Vietnam Memorial wall is awe inspiring when you stand before it as I did in middle school. I saw the beauty of the marble and the carvings of each letter forming the many names along it. However, my childish mind never saw what the artist envisioned with the wound carved into the ground. Looking at the picture in the e-book, I can see where her thought process came out in the finished product, and it gives even more beauty to the monument in my opinion.

I believe that beauty has a different meaning to everyone. Some people describe something as beautiful because it is visual appearing to the eye. I believe the real definition of beauty is more of an emotion than a cosmetic idea. Someone’s personality can be “beautiful” but we can’t see it? “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is a great way to describe the term, because the definition of beautiful varies greatly from person to person.
Beauty relates to art because art is oftentimes an expression, on canvas, of one’s emptions. If a person can personally relate to a certain piece of art, or finds it calming to them they’ll describe the piece as beautiful. Some may see a beach landscape with a sunset as beautiful, while another person sees a dark cave with icicles as beautiful. In comparison to people wearing makeup, beauty in art isn’t always bright colors and patterns.
