For example, organizations such as Walmart select the biggest hits from the broadest genres, called the “short head.” The short head means Walmart will only carry a select mix of country, pop, and rock that is calculated to provide the greatest cost/benefit. The business model of Amazon is different. Amazon provides the short head but also provides the “long tail” of more than 100,000 different audio selections. The competition for customers between the Walmart and Amazon marketplace is profoundly changing the face of retail business today.

Does Social Media Make People More Alone?
We are living in a post modern era, an era, which has tremendous innovations and advancement in every sphere of life. One of the marvelous and magnificent inventions of the 20th century is computer & information technology (IT). It is most powerful and prestigious than nuclear technology.
Social Media (Facebook, Twitter etc.) in the recent era have become the most influential source these days. By its emergence from last decade, it has now gained the ability of immense persuasion over any fact. In other words, the audience finds it hard to regret anything that social media have presented. Both Facebook and Twitter are social media but they have many similarities as well. And both are popular in cyber world. Facebook is being used for different purposes. It is mainly used by individuals, especially young generation, who wish to stay connected, or reconnect with their love ones, colleagues, class fellows, friends and family members for the purpose of sharing their emotions, memories and their memorable events, their celebrations, joys and their sorrowful moments as well.
On Facebook users can upload their photo, share albums and videos, share links, write and share their thought through notes, send private and group messages to friends, create business or community pages, live text and video chat, and play games. While, Twitter allows users to post only 140 characters long messages or statuses called tweets and follow the tweets of other users on their Twitter news feed.
Social Media are playing a vital role in developing unity among the nations. It is social media that link societies together or else people would have even regretted accepting the cultures of one another. But currently, many research studies show that the social media are influencing people negatively. What people see is what they believe. Hence, social media pose a negative impact upon society.
Now we examine the second decade of 21st century, and analyze the impact, repercussion, and influence of social media on our social life. Everyone has seen the moody and temperamental. We can observe that at public places, airports, subways, parks, shopping malls, in colleges & universities, in offices and even in homes, man & woman, girl & boy pre-occupied and engaged with their laptops, iPods, iPhones, or cell phones, rapidly texting, sending, receiving and sharing messages and information to their beloved ones by using social media.
We are constantly immersed and engulfed in computer advancement and cyber technology that promote nonstop communications and instant gratification through social media. But are these post modern technological advancements or cyber revolution a good thing? And is there any end of this progression? The questions have no certain answers!
I personally believe that rapid growth of social media have negatively influenced the mind & soul and our social interactions with each other, because it is isolating us from reality, creating communication gap, and perplexing our concept of immediate-satisfaction.
By constantly being cut off from practical experiences and personal interactions because of social media, a generation with substandard social abilities is being groomed; a generation is being groomed with inferiority or superiority complex and lacking in balanced behavior. If a child or an adult does not face reality by experiencing new things, does not share his ideas or feelings, and does not make personal relationship, then he will never be able to live as a normal person in the society. Although our social culture heralds the social media as a technological wonders, there are suggestions that these ‘wonders’ have some hard and harsh negative impacts on our young generation and their personal practical skills.
People who are using social media intensively have been experiencing more daily stress and feeling more lonely and depressed. An excessive usage of social media can also have an overall negative effect on physical and mental health.
Social media have made us more densely communicated and networked than ever. And despite that all this social connectivity, many research studies suggest that we have never been lonelier, isolated or more narcissistic, and this loneliness is making social media subscribers or users physically and mentally sick. This epidemic of loneliness is ruining our souls and our society. The fears that social media are interfering with our real relationship, distancing us from our social relations and our friends, making us lonelier and more non-social and that social networking spreading more isolation in the society.
Social media have arrived in the middle of a dramatic and rapid increase in the intensity and quantity of human isolation and loneness, an increase that at the beginning made the social websites’ promise of greater connection and link seem deeply attractive.
But it is clear that social interaction and communication matter. Loneliness and being alone are not the same thing, but both are on the rise. We meet fewer people and we gather less, and when we gather, our bonds are less meaningful, less substantial and less easy. The decrease in confidants or intimates that is, in quality social networks, has been dramatic over the past 15 years. In one survey, the mean sizes of networks of personal confidants or intimates have been decreased from 3.94 people in 1995 to 2.08 in 2008. Similarly, in 1995, only 12 percent of Americans said they had no one with whom to discuss important matters and 15 percent said they had only one such good friend. By 2008, 20 percent had nobody to talk to, and 22 percent had only one confidant or intimate.
The American secular culture is suffering from this ‘loneliness,’ and the great American poem “Song of Myself” by Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s significant essay “Self Reliance,” and American great novelist Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick” are the reflection of loneliness and these literary piece of writings have carried the tale of a ‘man’ who is so lonely.
The above discussion enlists how social media have posed negative impacts upon society. Though social media are an advocate and the voice of people, it is not as pure as it is considered. Everything that it does is not only for the sake of people, but in fact most of its attempt is materialistic.
One must take full advantage of the social media but with an open eye to differentiate if the social media are posing negative or positive impact upon this situation.
Some critics have been raising questions of whether social media are making us lonelier and disconnected with each other, but the social media are just tools, they could be used to make connections and relationship or to create distance, just like any other cyber technology.
