This article by Rae explores the importance of inclusivity and support in the workplace. Several keywords and topics from our course relate to this article. These include the following:
Diversity- this means understanding that each person is different and recognizing our individual differences.
Commitment- this is the quality of being dedicated to an organization, activity or course.
Motivation- this is the desire to do something or the reason for doing something and in a particular manner.
Citizenship behavior- this is performing tasks that one is not obligated to and which he/she may not be paid for but ultimately help the organization.
Counterproductive behavior- this is behavior that goes against the legitimate interests of an organization.
Organizational goals- these are strategically set objectives that outline expected results and guide the employees’ efforts.
Leadership- this is the ability to lead or guide other people in an organization.
Organizational culture- this is defined as the existing beliefs, assumptions, values, and ways of interacting that influence the workplace environment.
Communication-this is the transfer of information from one person to another or one place to another.
Learning- this is the acquisition of knowledge, information, skills or better understanding.
The article primarily focuses on promoting diversity in the workplace by recruiting women and supporting them. The importance of creating a culture bias is not tolerated and where there are incentives that motivate employees to speak up in case of any discrimination. The article shows how creating a healthy working environment will make employees committed to the achievement of organizational goals. Also, the importance of helping employees thrive is discussed. If this occurs and the employees are committed to the organization, citizenship behavior will be seen since the employees will also work towards the growth of the company even if they are not paid for the specific actions. In turn, counterproductive behavior will be minimized and possibly eliminated. The article also explores leadership and how the learning process can be modified to incorporate accountability and leadership. The importance of communication is also looked into and how t can be used to pass along the expectations and also foster the workplace culture.
As mentioned, this article focuses on women in the workplace. However, there are numerous takes from it. I think that it has numerous lessons that can be used to make organizations better, in terms of the workplace and performance. I believe that diversity in the workplace is extremely important. The teachings from this article can be used to foster diversity, not only gender but also race, ethnicity, religion, age, among others.
Question: with the current tough economic times, how can organizations motivate employees to ensure that they are committed to the organization and that not counterproductive activities take place?
