The Middle Permian Park City Formation (North American stages: Upper Leonardian/Lower Guadalupian = 275 – 265 Ma) is mostly a fossiliferous micrite deposited on a shallow tropical carbonate shelf. It also has lithologies of dolomite, phosphorite, chert, and quartz sandstone (e.g., class handout). The brachiopod Punctospirifer Pulcher (Stokes, 1988) is a common guide fossil, as are crinoids, bryozoans, rugose corals, and fusulinids. The formation is exposed in thicknesses of up to 600 meters throughout most of northern Utah, northeastern Nevada, southern Idaho, Montana,

Within the bottom third of the Park City Formation, exposed in the Limekiln Gulch limestone quarries northwest of the Big U above the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, Utah, roughly 30 meters of the stratigraphic section were documented for this study. Based on differing lithofacies, these exposures are classified into four conformable units. Unit I is the oldest and consists of around 5.5 meters of tabular-bedded, medium-gray-weathering biomicrite with bed thicknesses ranging from 20 to 65 centimeters. The lower three meters are mostly detrital micrite, with up to
20% broken brachiopod tests up to one centimeter in length and sparse detrital crinoid stems up to four millimeters in diameter. Up to 10% of bryozoan colonies in growth position are encased in a 25-cm-thick bed in the unit’s center section, with diameters ranging from 0.81.5 cm and lengths ranging from 210 cm. Up to 90% of crinoid stems with diameters of 0.5 to 4 mm, orientated with stem axes perpendicular to bedding, can be found in two identical beds near the top of Unit I. (growth position). In addition, Unit I contains 5% dark gray-weathering dolomite in small lenses
and nodules, as well as two 10 mm thick beds (Figure__).
