Globalization and Cultural Identity in Literature and Film
The Initial Paper Assignment Tuesday, October 27th is the deadline.
Write a 3- to 4-page paper on one of the three longer works we’ve looked at (Once Upon a Time in China, Jasmine, or Goodbye, Lenin), analyzing how the work addresses globalization and cultural identity. Analyze how the protagonist of the novel or film encounters the forces of modernity, but, due to some particular condition or circumstance, such as strength of character, capacity for love and understanding, wisdom, knowledge, or skill (technology), or sheer will to life and freedom, emerges to be an even stronger person after some strenuous work or an arduous journey and struggle, after some strenuous work or an arduous journey and struggle, emerges to be an even stronger person. Explain what drives the protagonist’s robust response to the challenges to his or her very identity, as well as how he or she negotiates and adapts to the changes, preserving the most fundamental part of his or her self while incorporating the new affects and sensibilities of modernity. If you’re interested, you could write a postcolonial critique of Jasmine’s transformation as an assimilation into the American Dream and individualism, as well as the novel’s portrayal of third-world postcolonial women as the West’s Other, for Jasmine (i.e. a selfconsolidating Other).
1. Create a working thesis first so that you have a focus and, more importantly, an idea of how to develop it. Even if it ends up being very different when you finish, try to put it down in words. Modernity, globalization, cultural identity, the postcolonial (or postsocialist) condition, technology, capitalist consumer culture, migration/diaspora, transnational capital and labor flows, the American Dream, assimilation, the Other… are some key words you might want to include in your thesis statement.
2. Describe the significance of your thesis and how it relates to the plot of the novel or film. Give the work’s necessary historical or cultural context in a few sentences. Your introductory paragraph should include this contextualization, as well as the statement of your thesis. Write it in a way that will hold the reader’s attention.
3. Gather and organize your supporting materials, guided by your thesis. You won’t be able to include all of the work’s plot details (that would be retelling the story). Select those that are truly relevant to your thesis and pair them with interpretive comments so that they clearly demonstrate, validate, or advance your thesis. You can support part of the thesis with a sub-argument (a topic sentence) and then cite an example from the novel or film to back it up. One of your body paragraphs could be like this. Then, to support another part of your thesis, develop another sub-argument (or topic sentence) and back it up with citation, analysis, or interpretation. That could be the start of a new body paragraph… A solid essay body should consist of three or four well-written body paragraphs.
According to some writers’ wisdom, the second-best sub-argument (body paragraph) should come first, followed by the weakest, and the strongest argument should come last. You can also use the articles we’ve read for support, in addition to the novel or film.
4. In your conclusion, do not restate your thesis statement. Give it some additional significance or meaning (give the reader a parting shot). You may not require a conclusion if you have a strong enough body. Write succinctly and substantively.
