Nursing Reflection on an Ethical Challenge Essay
Subject: Nursing
Topic: Reflection on an Ethical Challenge
Paper details:
Please make sure everything about nursing in Ontario. Evaluation Criteria: Grades for this are based on the attached Reflection on an
Ethical Challenge, Evaluation Rubric. Note that this rubric specifies that any amount of plagiarized material will result in a grade of ‘0’ for the assignment. Required Format: Each reflection should be approximately three to four pages of text (excluding title page and
references), typed double-spaced. All nursing learners in the School of Continuing Education are required to use APA (7th edition)
formatting guidelines for their paper submissions.
This (2019) 7th edition has specific formatting for student papers versus a professional paper (for example, student papers do not require a running head). To set up your paper using these 7th edition guidelines, go to the following resource: Title page should
identify the title of your paper, your name, the name of your institution, course name, assignment name, the name of this course,
instructor and the date of submission. Submit electronically as a Word document as directed above in Submission Instructions. Give your document a file name that includes your last name (surname) and name of assignment (e.g., Last name.
Reflection) APA formatting of reference literature is required. Follow the guidelines noted above and learned in your course prerequisite Scholarly Writing (NURS 1107/1114). There are no grades for spelling or grammar, but clarity of message is important,
so following English language writing conventions is strongly recommended. Required Content: Important Note: This assignment is not a paper about an ethical issue. It is a reflection on your own personal and professional values and response to an ethical
situation. Step 1. Briefly describe a challenging ethical situation: (150 words maximum) An ethical challenge occurs when one
struggles to determine the “right” course of action.
It may be a situation where personal values conflict with professional obligations; or a situation of “moral distress” where there
seems to be a clear solution but “we are unable to follow our moral beliefs because of external restraints” (Burkhardt et al., 2018, p.
99); or it may be an “ethical dilemma” where “two or more mutually exclusive moral claims apply, and both seem to have equal
weight” (Burkhardt et al., p. 125). The situation described could be one raised within course discussions, one you anticipate might be
challenging for you to deal with, or an actual experience in your clinical practice. If the latter, identify what you did/said in the situation. Protect the confidentiality of participants in your situation by using fictitious names as needed. Step 2: Reflect on this
situation/issue answering two main questions:
[i] What is my personal response to this situation? Include the following points in your answer: How does this situation/issue make
me feel? [Name your feelings specifically, e.g. angry? sad? etc.] What are my values in this situation and how have these values
developed? How might my values affect my behavior and others’ response to me? How might my values affect patient outcome? Do I
have a personal preferred course of action in this situation? i.e., a personal opinion on what is acceptable and unacceptable in this
situation? Note that feelings and values are neither right nor wrong.
It is important to identify and accept them, reflect on them openly and understand the potential impact of them on actions and
outcomes. Evaluation (grading) of this assignment is done on the basis of your ability to engage in the reflective process, and analyze
critically and openly. There is no judgment of your personal feelings and values.) [ii] What are my legal/professional/ethical responsibilities in this situation? What are the perspectives of key stakeholders in your situation (patient, family, Interprofessional
team members)? How do ethical principles apply in this situation?
Reference legal requirements, CNO Practice Guidelines or Practice Standards and relevant elements of the CNA (2017) Code of
Ethics for Registered Nurses that apply in this situation (using APA guidelines to cite your sources as noted above). Are your
professional responsibilities congruent with your own personal preferred course of action? Step 3: Create an Action Plan: Use your new insight and understanding of ethical principles and responsibilities to formulate a plan of action for future, answering the
following questions:
If I were to encounter this issue/situation in future, would I respond the same way or would an alternate course of action be
preferred? Identify your rationale for this proposed future action. If I were to encounter this issue/situation in future, do I feel comfortable dealing with it? If not, what do I think might make it more comfortable for me? For example, do I need additional
knowledge, resources, skills or perspectives in order to respond comfortably and ethically to a similar situation in the future? What
strengths do I possess that could help me with my action plan?
