This project will be completed in two stages: first, you will act as a consultant, and then you will assume the role of a mayor, responsible for communicating the action plan developed as a result of the consultant’s proposal.
Consultant (Part A)
You work as a consultant for a city that is looking into the idea of constructing a conference center in order to attract tourists. Make a recommendation to the mayor’s office regarding the center’s construction. (A paper written for the Brookings Institute by Professor Heywood Sanders is a good starting point for your research.) The report, which is available as a link below, offers information on convention demand and convention center supply.) I have also included some additional references to assist you with this project. You must locate two new sources to use in your research. Conflicting sources are likewise appropriate as long as the analysis is based on sound economics.
Students must present a one-page executive summary with a recommendation for or against the project, as well as a defense of their conclusion based on economic reasoning and statistics. Students are forced to be concise and think clearly about what they want to communicate because they only have one page to work with. Use the tools you’ve learned in class to get full credit (opportunity cost for example). Students are only allowed to submit a one-page executive summary. On a separate page, list your references.
Part B: The Mayor of the City
You are the Mayor of the city, and you have been tasked with informing people and stakeholders of the final decision on the convention center project. Both the decision and the justification for the decision must be discussed. A successful communiqué should be informed and compelling, utilizing information and data offered by the consultant, so that citizens and stakeholders eventually support the policy decision.
Students must produce a one-page press release for this section of the assignment. Students are only allowed to submit one page.
