Part 2: Identify three areas of Marriage and Family Therapy where you believe there are gaps in the field’s corpus of knowledge. Discuss the research gaps and make recommendations for future studies.
Part three: Describe your dissertation’s present concept. Discuss how this topic relates to our professional knowledge gaps.
Part One: Research that has aided in my advancement
Family therapy is one of the three studies that have aided my professional development as a clinician. Prior to entering the program, I had always worked with individuals and very few families, and I had no idea how important the family system is in the outcomes of the people I’d met. For years, I’ve been aware of dysfunctional households and the harm they cause, but I’ve been oblivious to subtle dysfunctional patterns that are passed down through the generations and remain hidden until they’re brought to light by a family therapist. Unconscious components of dysfunctional defensive behaviors, transactional patterns, and ideas, as well as how they effect family dynamics and relationships, have been discovered through family therapy. Another important area of study in marital and family therapy is the impact of family counseling on family members who have drug addiction problems.
Throughout my time in this program, I’ve learnt that everything is interconnected, and that each person plays an important role in the family system. Because of neglect at home or busy parents, one person’s activities can have a negative impact on the entire family. For example, on the topic of substance abuse, it may appear that a rebellious son begins to hang out with the wrong set and begins consuming drugs.
Because they are too preoccupied with work and marital issues, the son may believe that his parents do not care about him. When the problem is addressed in family therapy and all family members are engaged and active, subtle improvements begin to develop within the family system that would not have happened without the family’s support. My development as a clinician has also been aided by research on relationship counseling. Relationship counseling is effective in assisting couples in resolving their issues and deciding whether to move on or stay together. There are a variety of approaches that may be used to assist reestablish trust, emotion, and love in broken relationships, which is a new experience for me.
Part Two: Three Areas in which I Believe Gaps Exist and Recommendations
Dual-career marriages are one of the areas in which I believe there are gaps in marriage and family counseling. The goal of this field’s research should be to raise awareness and acknowledge the interdependence of the couple’s professional, family, and personal lives. Research in family and marriage therapy should analyze commitment changes in these demands at the dual development career changes, according to a recommendation on this gap. I also believe that research on internal and external pressures has been under-investigated.
On this gap, my advice is that research be done to see if stress factors may be changed. In establishing family and marriage therapy, continual assessment has also been underutilized. Follow-ups on couples seeking therapy are recommended to prevent the occurrence of the disorder. Part three: I’ve chosen the issue of parental alienation and how it impacts a child’s capacity to bond with his or her father.
This topic has been near and dear to my heart since I began my PhD studies, partly because it is an experience that I, like many other men, are currently going through.
Furthermore, parental alienation is a topic that receives little attention, and most people are uninformed of what parental alienation is and how it affects a connection when it is severed.
This topic is related to family therapy since it is crucial for a child’s complete growth and for them to receive affection from both their father and mother.
