Out of the three websites, I believe Snopes is the most clear in detailing their procedures, in which each article is assigned to one of their editorial staff members who conducts rigorous research and writes the first draft. They employ a technique or methods to reach an expert when deciding whether or not a source is both dependable and credible. I didn’t mind that they weren’t focusing on political issues because I’m not very interested in politics until someone with extensive knowledge and expertise can assist me understand it better. Snopes also has a page where you can find the most recent
fact checks they’ve researched and published, which are easy to follow owing to their organization. Furthermore, the policy on corrections is straightforward to understand and apply, making it more ideal for those who are new to research. When I was examining the Media Bias Fact Check website, on the other hand. I had several issues that I was concerned about. Despite the fact that the grading system appears to be effective for those who use the site, when you scroll down the website and reach the disclaimer section, which states that the website is not responsible for any errors or
omissions, “When factual errors are brought to our attention, Media Bias Fast Check will review and correct them. We strive to be as accurate as possible. Our goal is to establish MFBC rates that are as unaffected by our own criteria as possible.” This leads me to wonder if the sources have been thoroughly fact-checked to the best of their abilities, or if the website simply updates when new material becomes available. What if you’re doing a fact check for an important story and discover a week later that the information has changed, and you got a piece of false information that you thought was
valid in the first place? Examining information that isn’t derived from scholarly sources, I believe, is taking a risk.
