Social Determinants of Health Discussion
With my capstone project, I am able to impact a few different sections of public health. When it comes to the social determinants of health, these are genetics, behavior, environmental and physical influences, medical care, and social factors (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). I am able to make an impact in the behavioral factors, environmental factors, medical care factors, social factors as well as physical influences. I listed these for a few different reasons. When being able to give someone the opportunity to be able to have their hearing back, not only does change their social factors in communication, but change is the way they act as well as how they react to the environment around them now that they’re able to hear everything around them. When it comes to making an impact in different levels of prevention, I don’t necessarily think that I have done very much with my capstone project. The only thing that I have done is help prevent the community from their hearing loss from deteriorating even more. I definitely think I have made an impact when it comes to health promotion. Health promotion has to do with a process of enabling people or a community to increase control over as well as improve their health (World Health Organization, 2016). I want to say that my capstone project does make an impact when it comes to health promotion. Simply for the fact that I am trying to improve a population’s hearing. I’m trying to improve the people’s or the communities’ control over improving their health by being able to provide them with hearing aids or pocket talkers.
I personally feel that I have made an impact just by talking to them the amount that I have. I do feel like I am a part of some of their families because I do see them so often just to check up on them and see how they’re doing. For those of you that have not been reading my discussion post, my topic has to do with hearing loss in older adults in minority groups. I am doing my project as a grant proposal as well. I am trying to get help for this population not only in the senior home that I am looking at, but I would love to use this grant proposal all around Arizona as well. I definitely think I have made an impact in education. Not only in my education on the subject of hearing aids and pocket talkers as well as hearing loss. I also think I have made an impact in educating those organizations that I have been presenting to get funding to as well and those who have been reading my grant proposals.
I have also been educating the older adults and the senior home that I am working with on what exactly is going on with them and what exactly I’m trying to get for them. Overall I think the section that is most impacted by my capstone project is the social determinants of health just because it covers a little bit of everything where is education, levels of prevention, and more are specific to one thing only. This grant proposal has taught me a lot, not just how to develop and construct a grant proposal but how to be patient because things take time. I also think this experience taught me that even the smallest things would help make an impact. I think it has also taught me there anything you do to try and improve someone’s life or a communities life makes a difference.
