The final essay for this course will be a three and one-half to four-page typewritten (12 pt.), double spaced, comparative analysis of:
1) The Greek myth “Pygmalion”, 2) George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion and 3) the 1938 film Pygmalion starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller.

1) Introduce the topic of the paper, what you are writing about. 2) Describe and discuss the first work (the myth) considering the form, subject and content. 3 Compare the first two works (the myth and the 1912 Pygmalion stage play). 4) Further compare by adding the third work (the 1938 film Pygmalion). 5) close the paper with a conclusion to wrap it up and finalize all of it.
Details to include in the Final Paper
1) Introduction: The first paragraph will introduce your topic. Give sufficient background to develop the ideas you will establish in the paper, include a thesis statement. For example, “The idea of metamorphosis has been interpreted through many different theatrical and visual mediums.
A central theme is consistent in each piece, the interpretation differs”. You will strengthen this by including the dates the work was created, name and origin of the playwright and how it was to be viewed by an audience, i.e. a stage play, a B&W film.
2) Body: Write five to six carefully constructed paragraphs to support your thesis statement. Begin by comparing the “Pygmalion” myth to Shaw’s stage play Pygmalion, then include the B&W film Pygmalion in your comparison. Use the vocabulary of each discipline that you have been studying to describe your ideas. For instance, in the visual arts, what words would you use to describe the scenery, costuming, overall atmosphere of the film?
3) Conclusion: Summarize your main point. Consider including a bit of dialogue from the script or some other interesting aspect from the art pieces you discuss, to give your ending a punch.
Use your journal, research assignments, and handouts to review and formulate your ideas and conclusions related to the theme of metamorphosis, as presented through the various adaptations of the Pygmalion story discussed this semester.

Things to remember
- The titles of plays and movies are capitalized and are put in italics. The title of the myth would be capitalized and in quotes.
- When naming a playwright, author, visual artist or actor, give their full name the first time they are mentioned, subsequently just use their last name.
- Although we only read the script of the stage play, Pygmalion, the playwright’s intent was that the audience would see it acted on the stage with appropriate costume and scenery. Don’t say the play had no visual element.
