(250-300 words) Introduction (10 marks)

You’ll want to start with some facts that will persuade the reader that your topic is worth discussing. Include the following:

o What is Mars and where is it?
o Why are we looking for life on Mars rather than other planets?

You’ll need to provide a definition for the term “life.”

Give some historical context – did anyone assume there was life on Mars at any point? Why do you think that is?

What is the current state of mind?

Statement of Purpose (this could be a subheading under Introduction or a separate heading)

Can Life Exist on Mars? (between 400 and 600 words) (20 points)

Describe at least two of the conditions that a planet must meet in order to support (and sustain) life (e.g. water, etc.). Please keep in mind that liquid water and the temperatures at which water becomes liquid are the same thing.

Discuss TWO pieces of evidence that Mars satisfies (or satisfies at some point) some of these requirements (in detail). Note that I’m not looking for proof of life; rather, I’m looking for proof that there was a suitable environment in which life could thrive. Explain each piece of evidence you’ve chosen:

o What did you notice? (for example, ice crystals)
o How did you notice it? (Satellite images, for example)
o What does the proof show? (For example, Mars has water.)

Is it possible that Mars once had the appropriate conditions to support life? So, how about now?

Life is still being sought (500-700 words) (25 points)

You proved (hopefully) that there is a chance that life can/could exist on Mars in the preceding section (e.g. Mars has water). This section will go through how we look for life on Mars. Please seek for clarification on the Forums if you are unsure about the differences between these two parts.

Use of Sources (worth a maximum of 20% of the total points). Zero points:  Student failed to include citations and/or references. Or the student failed to submit a final paper. 5 out 20 points:  Sources are seldom cited to support statements and/or format of citations are not recognizable as APA 6th Edition format. There are major errors in the formation of the references and citations. And/or there is a major reliance on highly questionable.
