Description
Choose four of the six topics to respond to. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling count for each response. Please be sure to answer all parts of the questions. Each response should be no less than 300 words double spaced (a page to a page and a half double spaced.) Do not copy and paste information from any source to complete your answers. If you are going to quote something it needs to be cited properly (MLA) and will not count in your word count. You may number your response so I know which four topics you are responding to.
1. World War II had a huge impact on how our global modern world functions and interacts. What do you believe had the most profound impact on how the US dealt with foreign countries? Do you think that our relationship with former Axis countries has taken a positive turn on are there still underlying issues? What about our relationship with other Ally nations? Did we learn from the largest man made conflict the world has ever encountered?
2. Was the Marshall Plan a success for failure? Explain. Is there something we could have done differently to create allies or make the world safe for democracy? Could post WWII America have dealt with the Soviet Union and the spread of communism in a better way or were the two power houses destined to be in conflict with one another for ideological reasons? Explain.
3. Of the three events, Cuban Missile Crisis, building of the Berlin Wall, and the Korean Conflict which do you think was most important in determining how the US dealt with the Cold War? Did any have more of an impact on how Americans felt at home or how we were viewed abroad? Which one showed our willingness to engage in conflict or that we were determined to stop the spread of Communism or vice versa for the Soviet Union?
4. How would you describe the Civil Rights Movement in the United States? Was it mostly contained to the two decades of the 1950’s and 1960’s or should it be described as The Long Civil Rights Movement that really spanned the entirety of our nation’s history? Support your answer.
5. How did the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the communist regime in the USSR affect the relationship between the USSR and the United States? Was this a win for the United States or just a failing of diplomacy and bad policies? Explain.
6. How do modern events shape US foreign policy? Have our policies gradually changed since WWII or have our objectives generally stayed the same? Have our policies been successful? Do you think other countries, nation-states, and groups respect us, fear us, or feel we are too involved around the world? If you could change one thing about our current foreign policy objectives what would it be? Explain.
